Diamond Tutorial

Introduction

Troy Diamond Reports represent Wholesale Single Diamond CASH Asking Prices in 9 Mediums of Exchange stated in "Total Value." When a diamond's "Quality" is known (the 4 C's: Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat weight), its "Current Global Worth" is easily determined in the most recent report. (See: GIA Video on the 4 C's, and Troy Diamond Report: EUR-Round Brilliants-Feb 2009)

Every Troy Diamond Report is updated monthly adjusting to global changes in diamond values, automatically adjusting to changes in the currency and/or medium of exchange used.

Wholesale Cash Asking Prices Defined

It is important to note: Wholesale Cash Asking Prices are NOT equivalent to transactional prices and the Wholesale definition used is that of a "Single Diamond Purchased for Resale" properly documentation, such as by a GIA Report. Actual transactional prices can vary above or below the Wholesale Cash Asking Price depending upon circumstances, timing, location, volume and motivations involved.

Online vs. Wholesale Cash Asking

Online prices vary greatly depending upon website and documentation used to identify a diamond's quality.  The Gemological Institute of America's Gem Trade Lab Reports currently are the highest standard worldwide. GIA is considered world's foremost authority, but their reports do NOT state value, only the quality of the diamond.  Also note, websites selling diamonds with GIA Reports are available online directly from diamond dealers or manufacturers at or near Wholesale Cash Asking Prices.

Retail vs. Wholesale Cash Asking

Wholesale Cash Asking Prices from a Retail Store owner's perspective is the average price a diamond is offered by diamond suppliers (from diamond dealers and/or manufacturers) they can purchase or have available to show a customer. Prices are negotiable, therefore a retailer's actual cost of a diamond can be discounted when purchased under cash terms for inventory or at full price if a diamond is in high demand/short supply or is requested on consignment/"Memo" from the supplier to be shown to a customer.

Brick & Mortar vs. Online

Brick and Mortar stores vary in pricings depending upon the store, overhead, brand of diamond carried, integrity, range of services and guarantees offered to the customer. The online experience can never match or replace an established physical store's ability that can offer full service and gemologists who intimately work with customers timely meeting their needs. But on the other hand, "Brick and Mortar" stores will also never be able to match some of vast inventories of diamonds available at some of the online websites at prices equal or near supplier Wholesale Cash Asking Prices. Some Brick and Mortar stores do compete with online websites by purchasing diamonds for inventory or in volume, or offering diamond brands not available online.

 Mutual Benefit

Consumers, Investors and Members of the Trade worldwide, all benefit from the information and knowledge contained in every monthly Troy Diamond Report, no matter the medium of exchange. Every monthly report represents the same global value, therefore facilitating communication of value amongst different currencies and references used. This is especially important when the "traditional peg" for diamonds, the U.S. Dollar changes in its value relative to other currencies, as in the period from February 2002 to July 2008 when the USD fell by 24% while at the same time the EUR gained in value 39% creating a difference of 63% in real terms!
